Strength in the Lord: Reflections on Ephesians 6:10-11

Confessing Church USA

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes." - Ephesians 6:10-11 (NIV)

Ephesians 6:10-11 calls us to rely not on our own strength but on the mighty power of the Lord, emphasizing the importance of drawing strength from God rather than solely depending on human effort. This passage serves as a profound reminder that our spiritual battles cannot be fought through human effort alone. Instead, we are encouraged to draw our strength from God's limitless power, recognizing that He equips us for the challenges we face.

Empowered by His Strength

The command to "be strong in the Lord" highlights the source of our strength. It is not through our own abilities or resources that we find the power to stand firm, but through a deep and abiding relationship with God. As we draw near to Him, we tap into a wellspring of divine strength that sustains us through trials and tribulations. This divine strength is not passive; it requires an active reliance on God. Just as Philippians 4:13 declares, "I can do all this through him who gives me strength," we are reminded that our capabilities are amplified when we depend on the Lord. In times of weakness, His strength becomes our fortress and our shield.

Putting on the Armor of God

The metaphor of the "full armor of God" illustrates the comprehensive protection and preparedness needed for spiritual warfare. Each piece of armor represents a critical aspect of our defense against the devil’s schemes: the belt of truth anchors us in the reality of God’s word, the breastplate of righteousness guards our hearts and integrity, the shield of faith deflects the fiery darts of doubt and temptation, the helmet of salvation protects our minds with the assurance of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit – the word of God – serves as our offensive weapon against falsehood. Putting on this armor is an intentional act, symbolizing our readiness to face spiritual battles. It involves immersing ourselves in Scripture, cultivating a righteous life, and steadfastly standing on our faith.

Standing Firm Against Schemes

The devil's schemes are subtle and pervasive, aiming to undermine our faith and lead us astray. By equipping ourselves with the full armor of God, we are prepared to stand firm against these attacks. Ephesians 6:13 further reinforces this by urging us to "stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Standing firm requires vigilance and perseverance. James 4:7 advises, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." Our strength and defense come from our submission to God's authority and our commitment to resist evil. This also involves thinking for oneself and standing up for one's beliefs, even when faced with opposition or difficulty.

Living It Out

To embody the strength and protection described in Ephesians 6:10-11, we must cultivate dependence on God through regular prayer and meditation on His word, fortifying our spiritual connection and reliance on His strength. Embracing righteous living involves striving for integrity and righteousness in all actions, reflecting the character of Christ. Preparing for battle means daily equipping ourselves with the full armor of God, being mindful of the spiritual realities we face. Finally, standing firm in faith requires resisting temptations and attacks with unwavering faith, trusting in God’s protection and power.
