Embracing Christ's Higher Allegiance Over Christian Nationalism

Confessing Church USA

In recent years, the term "Christian Nationalism" has emerged, sparking debates and concerns within the Christian community. At its core, Christian nationalism intertwines religious identity with national identity, often placing the nation’s interests above the teachings of Christ. As followers of Jesus, we must carefully consider where our highest loyalties lie. Our allegiance should be first and foremost to Christ and His teachings, which call us to embody love, justice, and compassion in all we do.

No Loyalty Higher Than Christ

Jesus’ teachings are clear about where our ultimate loyalty should rest. In, He instructs us, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” This verse emphasizes the primacy of God’s kingdom over any earthly realm. Our dedication to Christ must transcend all other affiliations, including national loyalty.

This means our values, decisions, and actions should reflect our commitment to God's kingdom above all else. In a world where national interests can sometimes conflict with Christian values, it is crucial to remember that our ultimate allegiance is to Christ. When we place our identity in Him, we transcend political and cultural divides, finding unity in our shared faith.

Embracing Christ's Call for Boundless Love

Central to Jesus’ message is love. In John 13:34-35, Jesus commands, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love is the defining characteristic of a true follower of Christ. It transcends borders, politics, and personal biases.

Christ’s call to love is radical and all-encompassing. It challenges us to love not only our friends and neighbors but also our enemies and those who are different from us. This love is not conditional on nationality, political affiliation, or any other human-made division. It is a universal love that seeks the good of all people and mirrors the unconditional love God shows us.

The Bible’s Teachings of Justice

Justice is another cornerstone of Christ’s teachings. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus rebukes the religious leaders for neglecting “the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.” As Christians, we are called to advocate for justice, standing up for the oppressed and marginalized, and ensuring that fairness and equity are upheld in our societies.

Justice, in the biblical sense, is about more than legal fairness; it is about restoring right relationships and ensuring that all people have the opportunity to flourish. This kind of justice requires us to confront systems and structures that perpetuate inequality and oppression. It is a call to action that demands our engagement and advocacy for those who are voiceless and powerless.

Living Out Christ’s Compassion

Compassion, too, is integral to our faith. Jesus exemplified compassion in His ministry, healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and comforting the sorrowful. Our actions should mirror the compassion Christ showed, reaching out to those in need and offering love and support. In Colossians 3:12, Paul encourages believers, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Compassion is not just a feeling but a call to action. It means stepping out of our comfort zones to meet the needs of others, whether through direct service, advocacy, or simply being present for those who are suffering. Compassionate actions reflect the heart of Christ and demonstrate His love in tangible ways.

A Faith-Based Call to Action

As we navigate the complexities of our world, it is crucial to remember that our highest loyalty is to Christ and His teachings. This does not mean disengaging from our civic responsibilities or loving our country. Rather, it means that our actions and decisions should be guided by the principles of love, justice, and compassion that Jesus taught.

As Christians, let us rise above the divisive rhetoric of nationalism and embrace the inclusive, transformative power of Christ’s love. Let us advocate for justice, showing compassion to all, regardless of their background or beliefs. By doing so, we not only honor our heavenly citizenship but also become true ambassadors of Christ’s kingdom here on earth.

In these challenging times, may we be guided by the words of Micah 6:8: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Let us commit ourselves to these divine principles, ensuring that our highest loyalty remains with Christ, whose kingdom is not of this world, but whose love encompasses all.
